Artists make pictures of themselves. Present-ing self. Works in being. Selfhood as subject, direct identity with created image. The artist being a picture, seeing and being seen, feeling being seen. Self portraits are about signification and meaning, as well as vanity and exhibitionism, personification of form and space, experiential currency, and individual presence.
Self portraits are a reflective response (mirror) to the world.
Insight. Content-ment. Self portraits are artifacts of a life.
I will not always look this way but I will always feel this way.
reflections of solitude are naked studio self portraits created alone or with the assistance of female models or assistants. My self portraits began in 2003. A few photos only are shown here and date from 2008 - 2015; the entire work completed spans 2003 to 2015. The pictures have creation dates shown but are not arranged or meant to be viewed as a chronology.
During the time I have been doing self-portraits personal photo technology and online social media culture have come into existence and grown. My use of self in pictures is not a social function. Art of the personal and intimate, the individual, not the social or group or political. Composed with camera on tripod, sometimes with assistance. Some pictures re-made over multiple sessions.
The pictures of me have not been re-touched for physical appearance. Self-censored for general online public view. Individual paper prints and print sets in limited editions.
