When I as in high school, and later in college and music school, I studied music transcriptions (when I could get them) of solos performed by many jazz musicians (Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Bud Powell, John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, Oscar Peterson, others). And much later some transcriptions of electric and acoustic guitar and other string players. Some transcriptions I did myself. To learn to play and improvise solos with a deeper and deeper understanding of the notes and intuitions of great players whose music I loved. And to add to developing my own solo voice.
Jerry Garcia's solo on "Dancin' in the Streets"
